Malaysian Pearls

Malaysian pearls are renowned for their exceptional quality, luster, and unique characteristics. Malaysia is one of the significant producers of pearls in Southeast Asia, and its pearl industry is mainly centred around two types: cultured pearls and natural pearls.

Types of Malaysian Pearls:

  • South Sea Pearls: These are the most famous and highly valued pearls in Malaysia, often known for their large size, smooth texture, and brilliant luster. They are produced by the Pinctada maxima oyster, which is typically farmed in the clear, nutrient-rich waters off Malaysia's coasts. South Sea pearls come in a range of colors, including white, cream, golden, and silver, depending on the type of oyster and the water conditions.

  • Black Pearls: Produced by the Pinctada Margaritifera oyster, these pearls are prized for their deep, dark hues, which can range from greenish-black to purplish-black. They are sometimes referred to as "Tahitian pearls," though Malaysia is a significant producer of these stunning gems.

Fresh Water Pearls: Malaysian freshwater pearls are cultivated primarily in freshwater lakes and rivers, particularly in the state of Sarawak on Borneo Island. They are known for their unique, natural shapes and vibrant colors. They are typically smaller than saltwater pearls but are highly valued for their distinct luster. The cultivation of freshwater pearls in Malaysia has grown in recent years, contributing to the country's expanding pearl industry, with these pearls often used in jewelry due to their beautiful iridescent sheen and varied hues.

Baby turtles at Turtle Island in Borneo Malaysia running down to the sea in the night with torches guiding their way

Baby turtles on Turtle Island, Malaysia, are released into the ocean as they make their way toward the water. It is crucial that the turtles are released at night, as the darkness provides protection from predators. The turtles are carefully placed a few meters from the sea, with torches illuminating their path toward the ocean. Turtles possess an innate ability to remember the beach where they first entered the sea. Therefore, it is essential to release them at the same beach, allowing their internal navigation systems to activate. The ultimate goal is that, as adults, these turtles will return to the same beach where they were. Turtles nd turtle eggs are protected on the Malaysian sides of Boreno, however this is not the case for the rest of Borneo or neighbouring countries. It is therefore vital for the survival of the spices that they remember where they were born and will come back and lay their eggs under the protection of the island.
